This time it’s all about women!
This is the first time in the history of Indian sports that the Ministry of Sports nominated nine women athletes for the Padma Award 2020. The nomination was started on the 1st of May and ended on the 15th of September. These recommendations have been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The recipients will be announced on the 25th of January and the awards will be given on the eve of Republic Day.
Below is the list of nominated sportswomen and their achievements:
Vinesh Phogat- Nomination for Padma Shri
Vinesh Phogat is an Iconic wrestler and she is nominated for Padma Shri award 2020. She was the first Indian women wrestler who won Gold in both Asian and Commonwealth Games also, she is one of the first Indian athletes who got nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards.
MC Mary Kom- Nominated for Padma Vibhushan
Mary Kom is a six-time world champion boxer nominated for the second-highest civilian honor award after Bharat Ratna the Padma Vibhushan award. Before this award has been awarded to only male sportsmen. She is looking forward to qualifying the 2020 Tokyo Olympics games.
Monika Batra- Nominated for Padma Shri
She is one of the best Indian Table Tennis stars with the 47th world rank has been nominated for the Padma Shri award 2020. In the 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold Coast Australia, she led the Indian women team to a Gold medal in the finals against Singapore.
PV Sindhu – Nominated For Padma Bhushan
Name of world champion PV Sindhu has been recommended for the nominations of Padma Bhushan award by the sports ministry. Her name is also recommended earlier in 2017, But this time the third civilian honor award will be given to her after achieving a landmark victory in World Championship over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.
Harmanpreet Kaur – Nominations for Padma Shri
Harmanpreet Kaur is a 30-year-old T20I who has been recommended for the nominations of Padma Shri. She was also awarded the Prestigious Arjuna Award in 2017, and one of the first Indian women to score a century in International women’s Twenty20 match in November 2018.
Suma Shirur – Nominated for Padma Shri
She is one of the best Indian Shooters who won the Gold medal in 10m air rifle event at the Commonwealth Games 2002 which was held in Manchester. The Sports ministry has suggested her name for Padma Shri to honor her contributions to the game.
Rani Rampal – Nominations for Padma Shri
The current captain of the Women’s Hockey team is recommended for Padma Shri. She was the youngest player of the national team participated in the 2010 World Cup. In the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, her team won a Silver medal.
Tashi and Nungshi Malik – Nominated for Padma Shri
The twin sisters Tashi and Nungshi are the first ones to climb the Seven Summits. They also reached the North and the South Pole and the three Poles Challenge. They both are the first female twins to climb Mount Everest.
